On May 5, 2013, in the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, at least 27 people were killed and thousand injured during clashes between police and thousands of Islamic fundamentalists. The conflict erupted as police and paramilitary forces used tear gas, stun grenades, and rubber bullets to disperse around 70,000 demonstrators who were demanding a new anti-blasphemy law and advocating for the death penalty for a group of "atheist bloggers." The protesters, who were supporters of the conservative Hefazat-e Islami group, had gathered to block several key roads into the city. The clashes resulted in several deaths when the police opened fire on the protesters.
